Data Centre Security Goes State Of The Art
Modern data centre’s at large colocation server farms are probably the most secure facilities outside of a federal or military installation. In some cases they might even be more secure. Visual Identification no longer works to get you into a colocation building. Now biometrics have taken over. You might have to swipe a card or with the newest versions just being close to a sensor will automatically interrogate the system to prove you are you without taking the card or other entry pass out of your pocket.
More sophisticated system rely on thumbprints, and voice recognition is used. Sometimes multiple interfaces must be gotten through before you can gain access to the data centre itself or more sensitive areas deep inside the facility. Ocular, eye ball scanning machines are coming to bear as the prices for these items start to stabilize and come down. A new and less expensive device, uses weight recognition to give you a go or no go to enter the colocation area.
Physical security is also being beefed up at many colocation buildings especially in cities prone to terrorist threats. No longer is brick and mortar enough protection for the data centre as blast proof walls and bullet proof glass get installed in older facilities and newer buildings are built with these materials from the ground up. And speaking of glass, the newest colocation data centre in the London has no windows at all. The only eyes to the outside world are through a camera which is then housed in a special high security bullet proof cabinet.
